It was the first full-size SUV to use an all-aluminum monocoque, cutting 882 lbs from its weight: the equivalent of removing all five passengers. Also in 2012, the new Range Rover Evoque Convertible concept was first shown, and early in 2014 it was revealed that the Range Rover Evoque would get the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission. Just a month later from that announcement, James Bond 007 actor Daniel Craig brought part of Manhattan to a standstill driving an All-New Range Rover Sport into its launch venue after a Bond-style chase across the city. “Everything we’ve done has been about enhancing our flagship SUV. The fourth-generation Range Rover is the finest yet, ensuring the original luxury SUV remains the choice for discerning customers the world over” GERRY MCGOVERN, CHIEF DESIGN OFFICER, LAND ROVER Spen King and his uncles would have been immensely proud of the growing size and variety of the Range Rover family. But even they couldn’t have guessed at the technology and engineering advances that would come next. In 2013, Range Rover revealed their first premium diesel hybrid SUV, and sent three prototypes on an arduous 9,950-mile trek along the Silk Route to India to prove this advanced new powertrain’s endurance. The following year, the new Range Rover Sport SVR became the fastest, most powerful Land Rover ever. It even set a new lap record for a production SUV at Germany’s infamous Nürburgring circuit. Also in 2014, the semi-autonomous All- Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) ® system made its debut, meaning a Range Rover can now help you reach some of the world’s most inaccessible places in luxury, it can even assist with some of the driving, too. In 2017, Range Rover took another leap forward with the launch of the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV * ) version capable of operating in a mode free of tailpipe emissions. Despite this rush of new models and technologies, Range Rover hasn’t forgotten its roots, as two events in 2017 proved. The first Range Rover Reborn emerged, restored meticulously by Land Rover Classic Works to its original condition, looking just as King would have seen it in the 1970s. And at the Design Museum in London, Gerry McGovern pulled the covers from another stunning new Range Rover design – the fourth addition to the family. Perhaps King might not have envisioned its radical new twin touch-screen infotainment system, but he would definitely have recognized the name: Range Rover Velar. In many ways, the latest exciting chapter in the ongoing Range Rover story brings us right back to the start, and no doubt there is still much, much more to come. * Range Rover PHEV model available in the U.S. as a 2019 model year. Estimated availability is Summer 2018. NEW HORIZONS The Range Rover Evoque was a radical departure for the brand when it was first revealed in 2010. As Range Rover’s first compact luxury SUV, it might seem a world away from the original Land Rover of 1948. But it shares two core qualities with that most utilitarian of vehicles. The first is its global appeal. Over 80 percent of UKbuilt Evoque vehicles are today exported to more than 130 countries, and demand is so high that additional manufacturing centers have been established in China and Brazil. Secondly, it has real staying power. After seven years on sale, the Evoque posted yet another year-over-year sales increase in 2017. The smallest Range Rover is now the biggest seller. And with over 200 international awards to its name, its trophy cabinet is as full as its order book.
